02 Reg Smart Car engine burning oil. How much to fix and will it pass an MOT?

My 6 year old Smart car i've owned for 2 years is burning oil, not a huge amount of smoke is coming out the exhaust but oil only lasts about a month before it needs refilled. Will it pass its MOT for now and i can fix it soon, or does this need sorting now... How much will it be to fix, I can't afford both!! :(02 Reg Smart Car engine burning oil. Any car burning oil will fail an mot. The reason you do not see smoke is you will only see it at 2000rpm and above. The mot examiner will rev your car at 2500 rpm for 1 minute. Get someone to stand behind your car, or if you stand behind your car get them to hit the throttle up to about 2500rpm and you should notice a cloud of smoke. If I am right your engine has a 4 litre capacity, so therefore your car burns 1 litre of oil per week, that is a lot. Sounds like your rings have gone or possibly your head gasket.

Head gasket could cost up to 拢500 and the rings could cost 拢600+ or do you know where there is a smart car in a breakers with a good engine, preferably one that's been in a rear end smash, as there is a good chance the engine is ok. You might get one for about 拢200.02 Reg Smart Car engine burning oil. How much to fix and will it pass an MOT?
This is a really difficult question to answer with any certainty with out seeing the car. During the MOT two gas levels are checked, the CO2 and they hydrocarbons. If your car is burning oil there is a chance that the hydrocarbons will be higher than the test level.

There are several possible causes for the oil level dropping, you can rule out some of the obvious things before you take the car in for an expensive repair.

First sounds stupid but make sure you are using the correct grade of oil.

Second have a check of the crank ventilation system as over time the pipe work can gum up with gunge and this can result in oil pressure resulting in oil from the crank entering the fuel inlet and burning.

Ja.
As you know part of the MOT involves an emissions test - when my car last had it's MOT I was told ';Make sure you have enough oil in there';, I asked why, and it's because they put a weight on the gas pedal and get the revs up really high for what seems like an age (but probably only about a minute).

If you have an oil issue now, putting it through that check on the MOT could totally screw your car.

For the sake of trashing an otherwise decent car, it'll be worth getting the oil problem fixed beforehand.

Ring around a few places or ask neighbours what garage they use and if they are decent.
actually all cars burn their oil to some extent,if you read the specifications in the user manual it usually quotes how much oil per 1000 miles and believe me, the manufactures tolerance is can be surprisingly high.

that being said, you may or may not pass the emission test, just depends on the readings at the mot station,

to me the most likely cause of your excessive oil consumption would be the valve stem seals, but i dont know if its a cylinder head off job on your car or not, try and track down an independant garage with some experience of smart麓s
It should pass inspection OK, as it isn't burning too much oil.

Bad news. The repair likely means completely rebuilding the engine and will be quite expensive. The repair may be simpler, but most likely the engine is worn below service limits.
