The cold water pipe going into my oil burner is warm. can anyone explain why and how i can fix it?

fyi, the hot water pipe and my hot water is hot. the cold water is warm. The cold water pipe going into my oil burner is warm. can anyone explain why and how i can fix it?
';cold'; in this case just means ';not heated';. That ';cold'; water is coming in from outside and if it has been hot lately the water coming into your house from outside is going to be warm. The cold water pipe going into my oil burner is warm. can anyone explain why and how i can fix it?
You don't say where that pipe comes from, or goes from the time it leaves the ground until it arrives at the HWH. Perhaps it goes through an south-facing outside wall, and is not well insulated so that it picks up heat from the exterior wall. Or does it come from the attic where it can again be warmed by radiant heat?
I once had a weird situation where a single-control faucet allowed cross-flow between the hot and cold water supplies.

Now that wouldn't have been too much of a problem except that the plumbing near the cold water input to the water heater was teed to allow a feed to some outdoor sprinklers. When the sprinklers were running one day, I happened to run some cold water in the sink in the garage, and noticed it was warm. Further investigation showed that the water inlet to the water heater was also warm - definitely not proper operation!

Initially, I fixed it by putting an anti-backflow valve on the input to the water heater. Then one day I happened to be working on that kitchen faucet where I had disconnected one of the supply tubes, and lo and behold, water came backwards out of the supply when I disconnected it. Close examination of the single-control faucet internals revealed a worn out seal between the hot and cold sides, which allowed cross-flow when the faucet was turned off.
call a plumber
torch
it sounds like you have a problem

it sounds like the cold water pipe, is sucking in warm water

you need a anti suction valve installed

or it just the cold is getting heated from the tank

if you run the cold, does it run cold?

if it does, dont worry about it
If you are talking about your residential water heater you should make this test:

Run the hot water into a sink or somewhere for about five minutes. If the pipe becomes real cold then that means the heat of the boiler conducts heat onto the cold water inlet during a period of prolonged non use. That is normal.

But if it is warm most of the time it probably means your dip tube has fallen off the cold water inlet and the hot water at the top of the tank is mixing with the cold water at the inlet and heating the water in the cold water inlet pipe.

. Savvy?

You will probably need a plumber to install a new dip tube unless you are a real handy guy.
