How much can I expect to pay to fix an oil leak?

I have a 2001 Impala, found someone to buy it but he found an oil leak that i did not know was there. It goes from the top of the engine and you can follow the trail of oil all the way down. How much will he be paying to fix this? I want to make sure I'm not getting ripped off by going down on the price because of the needed repair. How much can I expect to pay to fix an oil leak?
Bad head gaskets usually cause a drivability issue with the car. If it's just oil trickling down from the top, it should be a valve cover gasket. Valve cover or oil pan gaskets are usually the first to go. This car might need some extra time replacing one of the valve cover gaskets depending on which bank oil is leaking from. If it's the rear, they may charge a bit more for labor. However, it's not an extensive job so you should be in the clear. Heck, you could even just drive on it until it gets worse. How much can I expect to pay to fix an oil leak?
It could be something as simple as a spill from the last guy who added oil. If your unsure, take it to your mechanic for a look then consider going to the potential buyer if he chooses to do so.
Sounds like a valve cover gasket, usually they are no more than 10-20$. You may be able to fix it yourself. I would say it should cost no more than 60$ for a shop to fix. Depends on what their hourly rate is though.

If you go to autozone and show them the leak they will tell you if it is a valve cover gasket you need.
Sounds like the head gasket.
Seems like everyone is just sure it's the head gasket or valve cover gasket. Check your sensors first. The oil pressure sensors have a tendency to leak. Then, move on to a closer inspection of the valve cover and head....but I'm betting on a 20 dollar sending unit. Good luck.
From the top, runnng down the side of the block? Sounds like a valve cover gasket. Go to Auto Zone and fix it yourself. Easy job.
